Down the front straight as seen today. Black River Falls Speedway

Be sure to check out our full index on the left of this page.

It may surprise many to learn that Black River Falls, Wisconsin was once a hot bed of stock car racing. First, there was a half mile dirt track at the fairgrounds which held races until 1955.Remnants of that track could be seen until the fairgrounds renovation in 2008.The racing returned to the area in 1961 when a new 1/4 mile asphalt speedway was built 1 1/2 miles north of town on hwy 12/27. Driving greats such as Dick Trickle,Dave Marcis,Tom Reffner, and Marv  Marzofka made this track their home on Saturday nights along with other local favorites such as Bob Onstad,Gary Kniseley,Moose Peterson and many many others. This race track is still there today. It can be seen  on the Bement property (rented to Capauls Flooring) on Hwy 12, 1 1/2 miles north of Black River Falls on HWY 12/27. Simply walk behind the buildings and view it.

THE YEAR IS 1961. Below is the first Weekly Report put out by the Banner Journal News Paper for the opening of the new race track in BRF.  August 12 1961.

Here we will revisit some of the gone but not forgotten race tracks in our area.
