The Tomah Sparta Speedway was a quarter mile race track with tight low bank corners. Both ends of the track were a little bit different making set ups a challenge. There were no cement walls in the day, only open field off turn 1 slight stopping banks on the straights, and a trail cut into the woods off from turn 3 which you hoped you made when going off the track. The pits were located above the track with entrance and exit to the track being made in turn 1. The bleachers were simple planks over posts. The spectators were treated to a selection of goodies at the food stand and of coarse the beer garden. Most nights of racing were discussed at the beer stand re watching the nights races, with much laughter, finger pointing, and planning for next weeks race. The track was owned by Larry Trute. He has since sold the track and it became Excaliber Speedway which sits empty now. It was repaved and lengthened on turns 3 and 4 with front stretch cement wall installed. The entrance to the track in into turn 2 now with exit still out of turn 1. There is hope yet to rekindle the spark from this old track......
****The Date now is 2/18/11.. The rekindling process has begun. The reopening of the Excalibur Speedway is going to take place This Year. Check out the web page at www.excaliburspeedway.com . They have a tentative schedule posted for the 2011 racing season..
****2/26/11..Drivers/informational meeting was a success, It was headed up by Greg Oliver who has many years of racing experience. It's gonna be an exciting Reopening at the Excalibur Speedway in Mid May (depending on Mother Nature) . There were approx. 40 people in attendance. It was very nice to see the old racers along with the new faces.
**** The plan is to open the race track on May 27 if Mother Nature is willing to cooperate.
************Due to circumstances....The Excalibur Speedway DID NOT reopen in 2011 as planned. We all still hope that someday the track will be able to come to grips and reopen the great speedway. **********
